On average, it requires 18 to 24 months of preparation for the 11 Plus exam.

The exam will test maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Preparation can be broken down into five components: Topic knowledge, Topic application, Exam technique, Exam practice and Assimilation time.

For English specifically, key topics that your child will be tested on include comprehension practice papers where children have to read pieces of text and answer questions on them and writing tasks where children have to write something themselves. Some 11 plus English exams require students to write an essay or short story within a limited time frame – often between 20 and 30 minutes.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is understanding and reasoning using concepts framed in words. It aims at evaluating ability to think constructively, rather than at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition. It goes beyond recognizing vocabulary or language fluency to how we understand, reason, and engage with written and verbal language.

There are several ways you can improve your verbal reasoning skills. One way is to practice verbal reasoning tests. Reading newspapers and magazines such as The Guardian, The Times, and The Economist can also help hone your ability to read and quickly grasp the information presented in written articles.

You can also try playing word games and quizzes, for example spotting the odd one out from a list of words, giving a synonym or antonym for a word or solving anagrams. Encouraging your child to do crosswords and word searches, and play games like Hangman can also help boost their verbal reasoning skills.
